This literary trip across frozen seas to medieval Greenland made me very thankful that I live in the 21st century. A bishop, sent by the Church to investigate rumors of heresy and to check the progress of a group of settlers, encounters every imaginable horror of weather and desperation. How is it possible to like a book that so blithely describes the basest of human behavior? Amazing writing and vivid imagery make this compact novel impossible to put down.
