The basics of the plot are set forth pretty quickly in this novel. Mireille, the daughter of a wealthy Haitian businessman, is kidnapped and tells the tale from some years distance. The story is told from her perspective from captivity, where she begins to understand her true relationships with her family, her relative privilege, and the danger women face in a world of angry and stubborn men. A wonderful book, but difficult to recommend for the scenes of violence.
