Clay Jensen has just received a curious package in the mail: cassette tapes recorded by Hannah Baker, someone he knew, someone he wanted to be more than friends with. But Clay never got the chance, because Hannah killed herself. She left the cassette tapes to explain why, and Clay will spend all night traveling through town, listening to Hannah's story. She says that every person who gets the tapes is to blame for what she did, but Clay isn't sure why he's included in this group. He has to listen to all the tapes to find out the whole story, and to find out the truth behind the reasons for Hannah's suicide.
