If you ever played, coached or supported girls high school basketball, this old story (20 years ago) is still fresh. The Lady Hurricanes hailed from privilege in Amherst unlike the Roughriders made famous in In the Heart of the Game. Consequently, the Lady Hurricanes had to dig deep and toughen up to win the state championship in 1992-1993. What impressed me is how the town rallied behind the team, helping them reach their goals.  The outpouring of support reminds me of a visit to see a young star, now retired WNBA player Jackie Stiles, play at what was formerly Southwest Missouri State University. The gym was standing room only.  Fast forward to the present and community support still makes a difference, especially for high school female athletes who are often marginalized.
