Nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, The Secret of Kells takes place during the Dark Ages in Ireland. With marauding Vikings destroying the countryside, the inhabitants of the Abbey at Kells are in danger. Brendon, a very young monk, is torn between his desire to help illuminate the books and his assignment of working on the fortifications. What really makes this film breathtaking is the resplendent animation. Each frame is packed with celtic knots and flourishes that are almost overwhelming. This is the most beautiful animated film I have ever seen. The animation style is similar to Samurai Jack, so small children may be frightened of some of the images.
