Review

Solomon Schechter is working away at Oxford when a couple of wealthy, widowed sisters share a snippet of a manuscript picked up on their latest journey to Egypt. Schechter, a Jewish scholar, immediately recognizes the importance of the manuscript and embarks on sifting through 900 years of history, filling in the gaps of Jewish life during the Medieval period. The most astonishing find according to scholars are fragments from the original book of Ecclesiasticus, dated from the second-century B.C.E. The writers include a helpful list of illustrations and excellent notes but one star was deducted from the review rating because they did not include an index!
