Review

Finally after 3 long years, we have new music from Robert Ellis.  His last album, Photographs, rejuvenated my love of honky tonk and folk.  Lights from the Chemical Plant has Ellis reaching further out from his Texas roots to mixed results.  Some of the songs have fallen to prey to the likes of toothless alt-country, but the songwriting continues to shine.  Even on a campy track like opener, TV Song, with it's references to Betty Draper and "Oh my God I love watching my TV" chorus, it has a lot to say underneath.  Ellis is at his finest though on Tour Song, a tale, like many of his others, of heartbreak, broken promises, and insecurities that can drive a person crazy.
