Review

As a companion to the documentary Awake My Soul, this album collects sacred harp music from Alan Lomax's first audio recordings to present day singings. One of the earliest forms of uniquely American ecclesiastical music, Sacred Harp is sung in all day gatherings where participants structure themselves in a square, facing one another based on vocal classification. The result is both a powerful and haunting vocal sound that is sure to elicit a strong response albeit positive or negative. One reviewer summed it up well by saying, "Get enough people singing weird harmonies at the top of their voices and you start feeling a little sorry for the devil."
