The House Girl is a masterful debut novel, weaving the lives of Lina Sparrow, a present-day attorney and Josephine, a seventeen-year-old house slave in an unforgettable tapestry. As Lina researches documents to uncover a "face" for a class-action lawsuit to which she's been assigned, she begins to uncover questions and answers about her own past. In time, antebellum Virginia and modern-day New York blend to paint a vivid portrait of slave life and the life of a woman struggling to find her own voice.
