Set in the closed and paranoid society of North Korea, this mystery requires careful reading to follow the ins and outs of an investigation intertwined with political maneuvering and cutthroat bureaucratic jockeying for power. The irreverent main character, Inspector O, is protected by the reputation of his heroic grandfather and the indulgence of his current boss, but even he has a hard time finding the threads that connect a murdered foreigner, a bombed car, and a beautiful Chinese-Finnish woman. Readers who like to be transported to exotic places with their mysteries will enjoy this well-written book.
