Author John Pomfret follows some of the young Chinese university students he met in the early 1980s as they experience China's rapid economic growth and turbulent political development. Pomfret spent many years working as a reporter in China and speaks Chinese well. The personal stories his former classmates generously share with him show how events in the headlines have affected common people in China in the last 25 years.
