It is World War II and things are heartbreaking and confusing in Germany, and things only seem worse for Liesel Meminger when she is sent to live with a foster family. Throughout it all Liesel manages to find love with an accordion playing foster father, a boxing Jewish man, and most surprisingly - through books. As the war and chaos continues, Liesel starts stealing books, finding that words are something that cannot be taken away from her. She begins to realize all the great things words can do – and when thinking of Hitler, all the evil as well. Narrated by death, this tragic tale follows Liesel on her journeys as a book thief and as a girl trying to survive in a society she doesn't understand.
