History
The Stonewall riots were a series of violent conflicts between lesbian, gay, bi-sexual and transgender persons and police officers in New York City. Rioting began on Friday, June 27, 1969 when police raided the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in Greenwich Village. Patrons of the club resisted arrest and three days of rioting ensued. Stonewall is generally considered a turning point for the modern gay rights movement worldwide. Pride is a celebration of the anniversary of Stonewall.
