History

Flag Day is celebrated on June 14th. On this federal holiday, the U.S. flag should be displayed, from sunrise to sunset (provided the weather permits it).

The idea of an annual day Flag Day is believed to have been born in 1885 by B.J. Cigrand, a schoolteacher, who arranged for the pupils in his district of the Fredonia, Wisconsin Public School to observe June 14 as the Flag Birthday. It was actually 108 years since the United States official adoption of The Stars and Stripes on that date.

Flag Day is the anniversary of the Flag Resolution of 1777 which was officially established by the Proclamation of President Woodrow Wilson on May 30th, 1916. By August 3rd, 1949, President Truman signed an Act of Congress designating June 14th of each year as National Flag Day.
