New! Hungry to Help
Are you starving to do your part but don’t know where to start? Fresh City Life offers a few resources for getting involved and helping your community. Throughout the year, we’ll create partnering opportunities in the metro Denver area to help all of our citizens striving for a safe, warm and happy life. We’ll add new resources and ideas for getting involved each month. Here are some ideas to start your year off right:
- Donate food for someone less fortunate – it’s easy to donate and food pantries need your help. Check out foodbankrockies.org for information on donating to the Rocky Mountain Food Bank.
- Lend a hand with programming at Denver Public Library – Fresh City Life is looking for volunteers to help staff the Fresh City Lounge a couple afternoons each week. And there are opportunities to help with evening and weekend events. Help Fresh City Life help our customers reach all their goals! Email events@denverlibrary.org or call 720-865-1206.
- Take off some extra pounds and help feed others locally – with The Biggest Loser Pound-for-Pound Challenge. For every pound you pledge to lose, General Mills and other partners will donate 14 cents to the Food Bank of the Rockies through Feeding America! It’s a win/win. - Knitting for Our Troops – Caps Project
Fresh City Life is partnering with the Rocky Mountain USO (United Service Organizations) to create knitted items for care packages for our service men and women overseas. To date, caring knitters from all over Denver, Colorado, the US and even internationally have donated nearly 14,000 hand knitted caps and helmet liners for our service men and women. Our current project, adapted from a full helmet liner pattern (military regulation) is designed to be used under a helmet during cold nights on duty. It’s a great cap to wear when a soldier has off-duty time as well.
It’s easy to join the project: just knit a cap or two (or three or many) from the patterns at denverlibrary.org/capsproject and deliver them to the Fresh City Life office in the Central Library (Fresh City Life is located on Level One, west entrance) and we’ll bundle them up and deliver them to the Rocky Mountain USO. They’ll package the caps with other donated gifts and essentials for our soldiers and send them off.
Though we all have differing opinions about war, we’re not conflicted about our soldiers – who stand up for our country everyday. Knitting for Our Troops is a great way to say how much we care for our service men and women – and your donation will mean a lot to a soldier far away from home. And if you can’t knit, a donation of suitable yarn or even small care package items for soldiers shipping out are always in high-demand. If you’d like to make a donation of yarn or necessities, call 720-865-1206.
