DPL's Carol Edwards on Newbery Team

Children's Services Manager Carol Edwards served on the 2008 Newbery Committee

Carol Edwards with Newbery Award winner

The Newbery Medal is awarded annually by the American Library Association for the most distinguished American children's book published during the previous year. Over the past year the Newbery Committee considered the best of over 5000 children’s books submitted for the award. In preparation for the award, Carol read about 400 books, some numerous times. Service on the committee is one of the highest honors a children’s librarian can receive.

Carol has been at the Denver Public Library since May, 2007. Prior to joining us she served as the Assistant Head of the Children's Department at the Minneapolis Public Library, as Children's Services Librarian at the Sonoma County Library, and most recently as Head of Youth Services at the Philip S. Miller Library in Castle Rock, Colorado.

Carol is shown with the 2008 Newbery winner, Good Masters! Sweet Ladies! : Voices from a Medieval Village by Laura Amy Schlitz, illustrated by Robert Byrd. The book is a collection of short one-person plays featuring characters, between ten and fifteen years old, who live in or near a thirteenth-century English manor.

The American Library Association administers numerous awards including the Caldecott, King and Printz awards. Check out the 2008 Award Books for Children and Teens to view all the winners and honor books.
