Library Lab Class Instruction FAQ
Who can use the Library Lab?
The library lab is open to classes of middle- and high-school students from anywhere in the state.
What facilities are available?
The lab has 18 computers with full access to library resources as well as spreadsheet and word processing software. There is a computer with a large-screen video monitor for demonstration and instruction. Generally, we first show students some appropriate databases and search strategies, and then give plenty of time for hands-on exploration and one-on-one assistance.
What kinds of classes are taught?
The librarians who staff the lab can do general introductions to library resources, but most often the groups we get are working on a research project of some kind. Classes at the lab are tailored to the needs of each group, including topics ranging from anatomy to Chinese history. We select library resources and other electronic sources according to the projects being worked on, but at the same time we teach search skills, resource evaluation, and other research essentials.
What other services are available?
We often provide tours of the library in conjunction with classes. Denver Public Library is a regional depository for government documents, as well as a Patent and Trademark Depository Library, and we have featured those collections for classes. Library card applications can be faxed to you, and we can issue cards for students in the lab. (Students under thirteen need a parent’s signature on their application.)
Where is the Library Lab?
The Lab is on Level Four of the Central Library.
When is the Lab available?
The Library Lab is available for Middle and High School classes as follows:
Monday and Tuesday, 11 a.m - 2 p.m.
Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, 9 a.m. - 2 p.m.
How can I schedule a visit?
Call the Reference Department at 720-865-1363, and ask for Barbara Whalen or submit a request online. We ask that you make arrangements at least two weeks in advance.
We look forward to your visit!
