The First Black Ski Club in Colorado
Slippers-n-Sliders Ski Club was founded in 1973 by two black ski patrollers (Floyd Cole and Bryce Parks) at Berthoud Pass Ski Area. The club was formed to introduce more blacks to the sport of skiing, and later expanded its mission to help place African American skiers on the United States Olympic Ski Team. Slippers-n-Sliders soon became part of the national ski organization called the National Brotherhood of Skiers (NBS). It was made up of twelve other predominately black clubs already in existence throughout the U.S. In 1974 the club became a non-profit and it created programs for low income families to involve their children in the exhilarating sport of skiing. The club had the opportunity to engage many more young people who could not otherwise afford the sport. Even though the initial concern was to provide an outdoor experience for adults, Slippers-n-Sliders quickly changed their focus to the youth skiers in the community. They created a program called SKI FOR KIDS. Through this program they have provided training and equipment to many young people. To keep members involved, they have many year-round activities including camping, biking, picnics, golfing, happy hour gatherings and fund-raising events.
