Film Series: My Little Chickadee (1940)
FILM SERIES: WESTWARD THE WOMEN: WESTERNS, WOMEN AND HOLLYWOOD
As World War II loomed, roles for women in Westerns began to enlarge. Postwar, these female Westerns became a significant sub-genre. Western films are loaded with subtext and symbolism and these female-centric screen gems are no exception. Screenwriter and professor Darren Foster will introduce each film and lead a guided discussion after the film. He is the founder of Film Scribe Productions and has several scripts currently under option or in production.
Directed by Edward F. Cline. Starring Mae West, W.C. Fields.
The legendary pairing of Mae West and W.C. Fields in this comedy Western focuses most of the spotlight on Mae West. It's no surprise to find out that West is credited with the lion's share of the script writing for this film. But Fields claimed that no one had ever written one of his boozy, rascally characters as well as West did. Putting these two burlesquers together in the same film made it funny (haha) and funny (odd) – two titans battling for dominance. Come and see who wins. 83 minutes. http://denverlibrary.org/fresh#chickadee
