Yasiin Bey is Mos Def
Yasiin's solo debut in 1996 was called Universal Magnetic. In 1999, he teamed up with Talib Kweli, known for being a "conscientious rapper" whose lyrical focus is on black self-worth and social empowerment. They came out with one of the greatest rap albums of the day, Mos Def and Talib Kweli Are...Black Star. The same year, Yasiin came out with the solo album Black on Both Sides. He went on to record the albums The New Danger (2004), The Ecstatic (2009), and Tru3 Magic (2006). You might also know him for his work in movies like The Italian Job, Lackawanna Blues, Brown Sugar, Be Kind Rewind, Cadillac Records, and Monster's Ball, among others.
Talib Kweli's debut was with Black Star, but he's also known for his collaboration with Hi-Tek as Reflection Eternal, by which the 2010 album Revolutions Per Minute was recorded (the song "Just Begun" on that album also features Mos Def with Jay Electronica and J. Cole). Kweli's solo albums are Quality (2002), The Beautiful Struggle (2004), Right About Now (2005), Eardrum (2007), and Gutter Rainbows (2011). He also created with Corey Smyth and is the CEO of the record label Blacksmith Records. He'll be performing in Denver at the Beatport Lounge, a club within Beta Nightclub, on November 23rd.
Both Yasiin and Talib Kweli have collaborated with a seemingly endless number of other artists. Yasiin (as Mos Def) is featured on songs with the Black Eyed Peas, Kanye West, the Isley Brothers, Gorillaz, and Alicia Keys, to name just a few. Kweli's collaborations include, but are not limited to those with Pete Rock, Dilated Peoples, Chrisette Michelle, and Strong Arm Steady.
