Checkout Limits & Renewals

Some helpful tips for managing renewals:

  • To maximize your renewals, wait until items are nearly due before attempting to renew.
  • Courtesy notices are sent two days before an item is due and will remind you to renew items you want to keep longer. Please note, these notices are always sent by email or text messaging and will not be sent by phone.
  • Access My Account to track the number of renewals available for each item.

Renew your items:

In person at any Denver Public Library location

Online with My Account:

  • From one of our computers at any Denver Public Library location
  • From a home computer 24 hours a day

By phone by calling 720-865-1325 during Central Library hours, or by calling any DPL branch during regular hours.

An item may not renew because:

  • The item is on hold for another borrower
  • The item is a Featured Title, magazine, Prospector or ILL item
  • The item has already been renewed the maximum number of times
  • The item is overdue by 28 days or more

It is very important to verify that your renewals have been completed successfully by noting the new due dates.

Specific item limits, checkout periods and renewal limits.

You may have up to 100 total items on your card.

Books, Books on CD:

  • Checkout period: 3 weeks
  • 3 renewals unless requested by another borrower
  • No renewals on Featured Titles
  • No limit up to the 100 total item limit

Movies and Music
You may have a combined total of up to 50 of the following movie and music material types on your card at any one time:

DVD and Blu-Ray

  • Checkout period: 1 week for most DVD and Blu-Rays. TV series and nonfiction have longer checkout periods. See below.
  • 3 renewals unless requested by another borrower

TV Series and Nonfiction DVD and Blu-Ray
The following have a 3-week checkout period and 3 renewals unless requested by another borrower:

  • TV Series
  • Nonfiction titles
  • 3 renewals unless requested by another borrower

Music CDs

  • Checkout period: 1 week
  • 3 renewals unless requested by another borrower


  • Checkout period: 1 week
  • No renewals
  • No limit up to the 100 total item limit
  • Not all magazines circulate

Non-Circulating Items

  • Reference Materials
  • Western History and Genealogy Items
  • Some Magazines

Downloadable eBooks, Audio eBooks and eFlicks

  • Checkout period: 7, 14, or 21 days (user preference)
  • Renew option available 3 days before a title expires: a green renewal icon means the title can be checked out again immediately after the checkout expires, a gray icon indicates there are holds and you will be put in line to borrow it again.
  • Automatically returned at the end of the checkout period
  • Limit of 20 per library card account
  • View your eMedia account

Juvenile and Young Adult Items

Denver Public Library does not charge overdue fines on juvenile and young adult materials (materials with call numbers beginning with j or Y), but items will be declared lost on the 28th day overdue. An appropriate replacement fee will be assessed on the 28th day. No overdue fines are charged, however, once a lost item is returned.

Interlibrary Loan (ILL) Items

The due date is set upon receipt of the item at the Denver Public Library. Some libraries allow a renewal. If you would like to renew an Interlibrary Loan item or have questions, call the Interlibrary Loan department at 720-865-1718. Please note: Interlibrary Loan items that are stamped "NOT RENEWABLE" cannot be renewed but may be re-ordered. Lost Interlibrary Loan items are subject to a replacement cost of up to $250 plus a processing fee and overdue fines. More information about Interlibrary Loan.

Prospector Items

Books and Books on CD requested through Prospector checkout for 42 days (one standard 21-day checkout period plus one, built-in, courtesy 21-day renewal.)

Movies and music requested through Prospector checkout for 14 days (one, standard 7-day checkout period plus one built-in, courtesy 7-day renewal.)

Prospector items are not eligible for additional renewals and are subject to a $45 replacement cost if not returned. For questions regarding Prospector requests, please call Borrower Services at 720-865-1325.

Featured Titles

Featured Titles are multiple copies of bestsellers and other high interest titles. It is just like going to the bookstore with stacks of the latest titles. These titles cannot be renewed or placed on hold, insuring that these high-demand titles are available quickly. Just look for the Featured Title sticker on the spine or ask a staff member.

  • Checkout period: 3 weeks, no renewal
  • Not holdable


Return materials to any Denver Public Library location. Book drops are available at all locations.

Audio/Video Policy

Please keep the following in mind when checking out and returning CDs, DVDs, Videos, CD ROMs and Books on CDs:

  • The Denver Public Library is not responsible for any damage caused to your playback equipment by these materials.
  • Please make sure all pieces of the item are included before you check out or return an item.
  • Incomplete items may not be accepted for return.

If an item is returned missing one or more pieces, we will try to contact you. If the problem hasn't been resolved within 15 days of the return of the item, you will be charged for the missing piece(s) or, in some cases, the entire item. No fee adjustments or refunds will be offered for materials returned after this 15-day period.
