Artist and illustrator Tom Sarmo hosts this workshop focusing on using your art journal as a resource for new and original craft/art ideas. Learn how to build collaged, mixed media journals that provide a rich, continuous idea cache. The workshop will explain resource opportunities, innovative ideas, and concrete, how-to examples for creating and maintaining idea-sketchbooks. A variety of materials-use will also be covered. All fiction writers use reality to inform their work, just as all memoirists must be adept at imposing the structures of fiction onto life in all its untidiness. Author Jon Cotter explores how to locate the center of your story, spin crisp and absorbing dialogue from remembered conversations, and find the dramatic through-line in messy and interconnected stories. Students will also learn to create evocative settings, where to stand on point-of-view questions, and how to usefully alter your subjects. Exercises and recommended reading included. Headmistress Heather McKenzie teaches this workshop on one of the most important (and neglected) aspects of fine knitting: good finishing techniques. Students will bring several squares to each workshop and learn the best seaming skills (and other useful techniques) so that finished projects don’t look as though they’ve been made “with loving hands at home” – to quote our headmistress.
