I like to work out because it's a great way to release stress, to get better sleep and to have more energy. Yada yada yada, right? We all know these things are true. But, like most people, I get into ruts when I don't exercise at all. It's soooooo hard to get back on track. But I've discovered a few fun online tools -- which are available for free -- that might help keep you motivated!
Currently I use MapMyFITNESS to track all the exercise I do, minus my bike commuting (more on that later). I'm not going to claim to understand the psychology of why logging every physical activity works, but it does. There's something extremely satisfying about having a record of what you've done to keep you motivated. MapMyFITNESS is far and away the most comprehensive free app I've used to record workouts.

Getting in shape seems to be the most sought after goal of New Year's resolutions. The only problem is, it's really hard to get started (and we don't want to embarrass ourselves trying new things in a strange gym). So what can we do to get our motivation up and our weight down? Where can I go to workout? Check out Denver Rec Centers! They are a cheaper option to the larger national gyms.

Mearl Thompson, master tai chi instructor from the Ancient Harmony studio, will be leading our tai chi workshop this August. We'll be meeting every Wednesday morning at 7 a.m. on the north lawn of the library (at the corner of 14th Ave. and Broadway). Every year my family would write our resolutions down and burn the paper in the fireplace as a sort of contract by flame or a promise to the heavens, but whatever your tradition is, it is time to start thinking about promises for the New Year!

Nothing gets me moving more than the song Eye of the Tiger, but these albums provide a motivating soundtrack to get one moving and energized - whether it is cleaning the house, working out at the gym or having a dance party in the living room!
As a 40-something librarian who had a great-grandmother live to be 106 years old, I have wondered if there were steps I could take to make all my years healthy ones. I have read several books that explained how important it is to move. The authors take a sensible approach. We will not live forever, but by moving and taking other simple steps, we can live healthier, longer lives. Join me in moving!
