Message from City Librarian: Letter to the Editor: We are Relevant

The Denver Post recently wrote an article about how libraries need to reinvent themselves in the digital age titled: "Digital update for the public library" (12/7/11).

The article states “Libraries will look very different in the digital age, and they must," and also questions how DPL will remain relevant. We have a lot of data and many success stories to demonstrate our relevance. In the coming months as we engage the community to talk about our future and sustainable funding, these stories will be told.

In the meantime, here is the letter to the editor I submitted in response to the article (note, I was limited to about 150 words).

Everybody's Doing It!

International Walk (or bike) to School Day is Wednesday, Oct 5th!

In the 1960's about 1/2 of all kids walked or biked to school. Now nearly 90% arrive in cars or buses. Take a walk with your child and cash in on the environmental, safety education and fitness benefits together! Children ages 1-15 years of age typically receive less than $1 in traffic education and the cost of an injury involving a vehicle is staggering.

Safe Travel for the Elementary School Child
Children need adults to teach them how to be safe around vehicles, not to dart between parked cars, to watch for turning cars and not to play behind a parked car, even if it is in their own driveway. Here is a bicycle and pedestrian traffic safety education training course with K-5 curriculum from the Colorado Department of Transportation.

Center for Visual Art Community Art Exhibition

The Education Outreach Department of the Center for Visual Art (CVA) presents a Community Art Exhibit including art created by children and families at the Byers Branch Library.

When: Opening Reception, Saturday, December 11, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon

Where: Center for Visual Art, 965 Santa Fe Drive, Denver, CO 80204

The exhibit will open on Saturday, December 11 at 10 a.m., with an opening reception until 12 noon. A wall will be dedicated to the children and families who participated in the free art programs at the Byers Branch throughout the year, and left their work at the library to be put on display.

The art will be on display for the public throughout December.

This event is free and all are welcome.

Clear Eyes, Full Hearts, Can't Lose

I discovered the Friday Night Lights series recently and was immediately hooked. Despite the unifying narrative of high school football, a subject for which I have little interest, the great writing and interesting story lines kept me moving through the episodes quickly. And yes, after awhile I even started rooting for the Dillon Panthers to win their games!

With its fourth season beginning Friday, May 7 on NBC, you'll have to work hard to catch up, but you can get started by placing holds on season one, season two (the weakest link in the series, due in part to the writer's strike) and season three.
