The Denver Public Library and Fresh City Life My Branch are proud to be among the 150 libraries nationwide hosting the 5-part discussion series Making Sense of the American Civil War.

This reading and discussion series will use books and scholar-led discussion as an entry into serious thought, discussion, and further reading. It will also offer an occasion to bring diverse groups together at the Library to examine the modern implications of the Civil War and emancipation. Discover this pivotal period of American history with your community. This series is a project of the National Endowment for the Humanities and the American Library Association.

Learn About Fort Logan This Weekend!

Commander & Builder of Western Forts

You have 2 chances to hear Dr. Jack Ballard talk this weekend through Fresh City Life My Branch! Put together both lectures and get a complete picture of Fort Logan!

On Saturday, August 4 at 2 p.m. at the Bear Valley Branch, Dr. Ballard will be discussing his book Commander and Builder of Western Forts: The Life and Times of Major General Henry C. Merriam, with particular emphasis on General Merriam's relationship with nearby Fort Logan. Merriam was the first real commander of Fort Logan, and had the longest tenure as fort commander.

The Fresh City Life My Branch Colorado Authors Series delves into Colorado history this week with Joyce Lohse, presenting Mining for the Real Baby Doe Tabor on Sunday, December 4 at 2 p.m. at Schlessman.

Lohse has written biographies of various figures in Colorado history. In her latest book, Baby Doe Tabor: Matchless Silver Queen, award-winning Centennial author, Joyce B. Lohse, gives a biographical viewpoint of Colorado's favorite female mining legend.

Coloradans Who Saved America: Veterans Remembered

Fairmount Heritage Foundation

Fresh City Life My Branch and the Fairmount Heritage Foundation present Coloradans Who Saved America: Veterans Remembered on Sunday, November 6 at 2:00 p.m. at the Schlessman Family Branch.

Learn about the rich military history of Denver's two oldest cemeteries, Fairmount and Riverside, going all the way back to the Civil War, including eight Medal of Honor recipients, the Spanish-American War, and Nisei. Bring an unopened toiletry item to be donated to the Denver Veteran's Hospital for veterans in need. Presented by Fairmount Heritage Foundation volunteers Garry & Joan O'Hara.
