Song of the Jayhawk was inspired by the lives of the author's great-great grandparents, who settled near Atchison, Kansas, in the 1850s. A story of courage and despair, loyalty and betrayal, it follows two young families as they struggle with rattlesnakes, tornadoes, ice storms, childbirth and morality in a war-torn land. Hear the author share parts of the novel, its historical context, and tales of his family's connection to both.
