Here Comes Science by They Might Be Giants |
It's true that the band, They Might Be Giants, might be tailoring their albums to a younger ( i.e. toddler) crowd these days, but that does not diminish their musical talent or my enjoyment of their creations. Their newest album, Here Comes Science, has more in common with their other kids albums like Here Come the 1,2,3s and Here Come the A,B,Cs than their 1990 album, Flood, but the same playful lyrics and catchy tunes prevail. I would have loved these songs as a kid, but can truly appreciate their intricacies now that I am an adult.

Hungry Bird by Clem Snide |
Eef Barzelay introduced me to Clem Snide. I do like these odd names but it's not why I love this album.

Shine by Estelle |
Great vocals. Catchy, upbeat and fun songs. R&B, Ska, Hip Hop and Soul sounds. Guest vocals from Kanye West, Cee-Lo and more. And even a sample of George Michael's "Faith." What's not to love?

A friend described this as "Americana music from fairy tales." Perfect.

LP3 by Ratatat |
It's 70's videogame music made by awesome robots. All instrumental, really good to listen to while playing videogames or contemplating your future cybernetic implants.

Life On A Plate by Millencolin |
Remember punk-ska? Well if you missed the high-octane genre that reached its zenith in the late 1990s, this album will remind you of all the good things about the style of music. Life On A Plate is definitely more of a gem than a relic: With songs like "Bullion" and "The Story of My Life" -- the latter of which documents the singer's conversion to vegetarianism -- the record is a thrilling combination of exuberance, sincerity and genuine good times.

The Essential Dolly Parton by Dolly Parton |
Is your Dolly Parton knowledge limited to "9-5"? If so, you're missing out on some great songs from this country music gem. From the upbeat "Two Doors Down" to the heartbreaking "I Will Always Love You" (yes, the Whitney Houston version is a cover) to the awesome "Why'd You Come In Here Lookin' Like That," this is a must listen.
