The Brothers Bloom by Rian Johnson

If you are looking for a comedic romp with surprising twists and a lot of heart, The Brothers Bloom is the movie for you. Mark Ruffalo and Adrien Brody are two down-and-out brothers who dream and scheme big. Armed with little more than their wits and imaginations, they decide to go for one last big score but they have no idea what they are in for. Timeless in its storyline and fashion, this film has a wide appeal. As one who has seen many movies, it's hard to surprise me - but this movie blew me and my suppositions away.
Gigantic by Matt Aselton

Occasionally a beautiful movie comes along and you are so besotted with the characters and the stories you don't even care that it is a romance. Gigantic is such a film. While the main plot may be "boy meets girl" there are elements of achieving your dream, the wonderful hideousness of family and a mesmerizing self exploration about what we want in life. This may sound like a dramatic film, but amazingly it's not. I can't say it's "hilarious" because it's more subtle and deep than that, but you will be pleasantly surprised by how enjoyable it is. The dialogue in particular is stunning. If you like quirky romantic comedies without a lot of melodrama, this is a film not to be missed. Reviewed by Pterodactyl on August 30, 2009.

John From Cincinnati by David Milch & Kem Nunn

I've watched this twice and I'm still not sure what happened on this show, but I am sure that I enjoyed every minute of it. While the show takes places in Imperial Beach, CA and features a great deal of surfing, this show is not about surfing. The star-studded cast of Rebecca De Mornay, Ed O'Neill, Luke Perry and many other familiar faces, all commit to stellar performances. The writing, some done by Joss Whedon's brother, Zac, is Shakespearean at times in its beauty and unique construction. It reminds me of a heady mix of Twin Peaks, LOST and Highway to Heaven.
The Hollywood Librarian: A Look at Librarians through Film by Ann Seidl

It should come as no surprise that a librarian is gonna love a movie about librarians in film. Here's why I think you (the non-librarian) might like it too: for a documentary, it is a lot of fun. There are many movie clips in here that are amazingly rare and a pleasure to watch. Through these images, the role and stereotypes around libraries and librarians are explored. You may even recognize several local librarians featured in this film! This labor of love will have you rushing to the library for entertainment and information! Reviewed by Pterodactyl on June 13, 2009.

The Last Templar by Mira Sorvino

Based on the novel by Raymond Khoury, this made for TV movie is surprisingly good. If you liked National Treasure, Indiana Jones, The Da Vinci Code and Tomb Raider give this one a try. Mira Sorvino plays a Milano Blahnik loving archaeologist who is determined to discover the truth behind the theft of an ancient Templar decoder. With the help (and some hindrance) of an FBI agent played by Scott Foley, the pair ends up on the far side of the globe with a bigger secret than they bargained for. I was overwhelmingly impressed that Mira Sorvino portrayed such a brainy beauty. Keep in mind that this was made for TV (it is a whopping 170 minutes long) and enjoy the ride!
Nothing But the Truth by Rod Lurie

How far would you go to protect a secret? Nothing But the Truth is an excellent film highlighting the harsh battle between journalistic integrity and a society run on fear under the guise of national security. While the cast is star studded (Kate Beckinsale, Matt Dillon, Angela Bassett, Noah Wyle, David Schwimmer) it is Alan Alda who steals the show. Those that follow the news will recognize much in common with the Valerie Plame and the recent CIA leak scandal, though the story takes many dramatic liberties which enriches the plot! Expect to shed a few tears, get angry about the government and vehemently hate Matt Dillon. A tense dramatic tale which exhibits true character and bravery - not a film to miss.
Cadillac Records by Darnell Martin

Cadillac Records is the fascinating story of Chess Records started by Leonard Chess in Chicago and touches on the biographies of not only Leonard Chess but musical geniuses like Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Chuck Berry and Etta James. I see this as Beyonce's labor of love. She not only stars in the movie but carries an Executive Producer credit as well. Her portrayal of Etta James is poignant and full of feeling. Her rendition of "At Last" brought tears to my eyes. It does have a bit of sex, drugs and violence as any good Rock N' Roll movie should, so I'd watch it after the kiddos have gone to sleep.

Burn Notice: Season One by Matt Nix

Burn Notice reminds me of great TV shows like the A-Team and Magnum PI. A-Team because this motley troupe of specialized rogue agents are always helping someone with a difficult problem only they can seem to handle. And Magnum because of the direct way the narrator converses with the audience. Each episode starts with "When you're a spy..." and proceeds to give you solid advice on what you can do should you get into a knife fight in the bathroom or need to stop a car when your breaks have been cut. The cast is great and while it is primarily an action/adventure based show, frequently has me laughing out loud! Reviewed by Pterodactyl on March 23, 2009.

The Lives of Others by Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck

Why did I wait so long to see this movie? The Lives of Others won the 2007 Academy Award for Best Foreign Film, and it is well-deserved. In East Germany before the wall came down, the Stasi (secret police) spied on artists they thought might have subversive leanings. A Stasi officer assigned to monitor the wiretaps in a writer's home starts to become sympathetic. We follow his subtle transformation from a stereotypical militant oppressor to a sensitive human being. It's much more nuanced than I can put into words. Watch the DVD extras, too - especially the interview with the writer/director and the experiences of the lead actor, who was investigated by the Stasi himself as a young actor. The film transitions between the live shows, interviews with band members, and beautiful shots of the Icelandic landscape.
Riki-Oh: The Story of Ricky by Nam Na Choi

Riki-Oh is a movie about a man who is locked in a privatized prison... A man so insanely tough that he keeps five bullets in his chest as "souvenirs." The prison is run by an evil warden and his wicked assistant, and each of the four cell blocks are controlled by a member of "The Gang of Four" - all of whom are vicious martial artists. That's about it... Oh yeah, did I mention that Ricky is a master of "Chi Gong" (a technique that allows Ricky to channel his superhuman strength and gives him the power to make people explode into bloody bits of flesh when he punches them)? Well, there's that too. This makes Riki-Oh both the most insanely violent and insanely awesome movie I've ever seen. Reviewed by Todd on July 14, 2008.

A story of two war orphans struggling to survive in World War II Japan, Grave of the Fireflies is one of the most emotionally rending movies I've ever seen, and I can only bear to watch it once every few years because it is so painful to experience. Yet it is for this very reason that this is a film that must be seen. It isn't a happy story, but the protagonists Seita and his younger sister Setsuko do have moments of childlike innocence and joy even as the world around them falls apart. Truly one of the finest movies I've ever seen illustrating the price of war, and easily the most emotionally powerful piece of animation I've ever experienced. Highly recommended. The film is very stylized and has a 70s look and feel right down to the obsession for cars, and is really an homage to those chase and crash movies from 30 years ago. Originally released as part of the Grindhouse Presents double feature with director Robert Rodriguez. Reviewed by Shamus on February 26, 2008.

Tears of the Black Tiger by Wisit Sasanatieng

Dum, a peasant, falls in love with Rumpoey the governor's daughter (and also the meanest girl in town). Sound like a bad drama? Wrong! This is a hilarious Thai western. Yes, a Thai western! The color used in the film is mesmerizing and beautiful -- think Amelie -- and the action is half martial arts and half cowboy showdown. The dialogue moves from tongue-in-cheek to an almost Bollywood-y level of swooning and drama. The movie doesn't quite deliver on the promise of the first 15 minutes the whole way through, but it's still worth a watch. Reviewed by Chach on February 23, 2008.

The Station Agent by Thomas McCarthy

On the surface, the subject matter of this film would appear to be rather depressing: a guarded dwarf loses his best friend, inherits an old train depot in rural New Jersey and tries his best to live in solitude. Almost immediately, he is assailed by a wonderful cast of characters, each with their own issues, and reluctantly begins to build relationships. The script and direction allow the story to slowly unfold while you are increasingly drawn into their world. Reviewed by Shamus on February 28, 2007.

If you loved the original Doctor Who series, you're sure to get a kick out of this. Actually, if you're a Sci-Fi fan at all, you'll like the updated adventures of the time traveling Doctor and his companion, Rose.
Stage Beauty by Richard Eyre

In 17th Century London theatre, men still play the female roles, and Ned Kynaston (Billy Crudup) is the best. Suddenly the capricious King Charles II decrees that all female roles will be played by women. Ned's dresser, Maria (Claire Danes), becomes all the rage because, after all, she learned from the best. The idea of coming to grips with your identity when the rug has been pulled out from under you is gripping. Billy Crudup and Claire Danes are terrific, as are the supporting players including Rupert Everett and Tom Wilkinson.
Shaun of the Dead by Edgar Wright

Billed as "A Romantic Comedy...with Zombies," I was expecting a spoof of the stereotypical horror movie. It does have all the typical elements: Social commentary, a normal guy who has to step up and become the hero, a love story, brain-eating zombies and plenty of blood. But instead of just a spoof, I got a good horror movie that is absolutely hilarious...on purpose. This movie is full of comic moments, from Shaun fantasizing that his step-father has become a zombie just so he has a reason to kill him to deciding that the local pub is the safest place to hide out, and it has some good horror movie scares as well.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind by Michel Gondry

Beloved by reviewers and fans, yet underappreciated by the time 2004's awards year had unfolded, this film will be seen years hence as one of the most memorable, innovative, bittersweet, heartening, joyful, sorrowful, mind-wringing and perspective-changing films of all time. Both Winslet and Carrey deliver incredibly nuanced performances of characters very unlike either of their standard types: neither Classical Kate nor Caricature Carey are anywhere to be seen. Filled with an excruciatingly personal sense of story and character, it is a film about the way memory binds mind and heart. Many will pass through it unchanged, but a handful of others will treasure the day they saw it and watch their world, and their memories, change around them afterwards.

The Hunt for Red October by John McTiernan

A nearly-perfect movie about a missing Russian submarine and the Americans who are trying to intercept it. Is the captain of the Red October going to defect, or nuke New England? How can the Americans determine the Red October?s objective without tipping off the rest of the Russian fleet? The cast includes Sean Connery as the captain of the Red October, Alec Baldwin as Jack Ryan in his best role to date, Scott Glenn and James Earl Jones. Watch for small but pivotal performances by Courtney B. Vance as Jonesy, the radar operator, and Richard Jordan as the National Security Advisor. There is not a single wasted moment in this film. The soundtrack is fabulous - you may find yourself humming the Russian national anthem. This is the first (and best) of the Jack Ryan series. The role of Jack Ryan was taken over by Harrison Ford and Ben Affleck in the later films.
Love, Actually by Richard Curtis

It was the cast list that convinced me to check out this one: Colin Firth, Emma Thompson, Liam Neeson, Hugh Grant, Alan Rickman, Laura Linney, etc. This is a series of vignettes, about, well, love, actually. All kinds of love - fraternal, new, puppy, father/son, mid-life married, secret, you name it. Some of the scenarios are laugh-out-loud hilarious and others are heart-wrenchingly bittersweet. Rated R for nudity: the sweetest story centers around two very innocent stand-ins on the set of a porn movie. You've got to see it to believe it, but better wait 'til the kids go to bed. This is much more a vehicle for the actors than it is a typical "Tim Burton movie." It's a larger than life fairy tale about a son (Billy Crudup) trying to connect with his dying father (Albert Finney/Ewan McGregor). Crudup reflects on the tall tales he's heard since childhood in an attempt to find the truth of who his father really is. Reviewed by Janet on January 21, 2005.

Dark City by Alex Proyas

A futuristic tale of a city where the sun never shines. This is the story of John Murdoch (Rufus Sewell), the one man who has escaped the influence of "The Strangers." Replete with homages to classics like M and Metropolis this is a stunning visual experience.
Morvern Callar by Lynne Ramsay

The film opens when Morvern Callar (played by Samantha Morton) discovers her dead boyfriend's body, along with a suicide note and a copy of his unpublished novel. She picks up the pieces of her life by telling everyone they've broken up, disposing of the body and publishing his novel under her own name. What does she do with the advance money? She goes clubbing. Samantha Morton is brilliant as usual, representing the genius, the faker and the estranged alien within each of us. Reviewed by 51 on January 13, 2005.

Man of the Century by Adam Abraham

A man in modern times unquestioningly acts with morals and an attitude from the idealistic, stereotypical 1920s. He's got a positive smile and a feeling that everything will come up roses. Of course, he's stuck in the modern world, where crime is rampant and women are "too fast". Hilariously funny, demandingly clever and good for a unique escape. Reviewed by 51 on January 13, 2005.

Lost In Translation by Sofia Coppola

Written and directed by Sofia Coppola, this film will not shock you with its pace. It's slow and meandering, but you will finish it with the same feeling as the main characters at the end of the film: that somehow you've bumbled your way through a meaningful experience that no one can take away from you. Beautifully filmed and scripted, some of the best scenes have no dialog whatsoever. Bill Murray may have pulled off his finest performance and Scarlett Johannson solidifies herself as more than capable of playing an intricately thoughtful character. Using Tokyo as the backdrop, Sofia Coppola sums up what it's like to find a small piece of yourself in the middle of a strange and foreign land. Reviewed by 51 on January 13, 2005.

In America by Jim Sheridan

Picture your average tight-lipped, emotionally-distant Western hero in an average cowboy movie. That's the protagonist in this film--except that he's an Irish immigrant to New York City and wants to act on stage.
Spaceballs by Mel Brooks

Admittedly, not Mel Brooks' finest, but worth special mention as one of the finest parody movies ever. Mixing thinly-veiled, intellectual references (like Kafka) with low-brow humor, Brooks gives us a world more true to life than we realize - a world where evil will always triumph. Why? Because "Good is dumb." Reviewed by 51 on January 13, 2005.
