SBTRKT the mask and you still have the smooth...

SBTRKT album cover

It's pronounced "Subtract" but this Batman of the UK dance scene is making additions to his resume this year...

Up until now, DJs and beat lovers mostly knew this south London producer for some high-profile remixes of the likes of M.I.A., Basement Jaxx and Underworld, but this year the man behind the mask drops his full-length self-titled album "SBTRKT", and it is a smooth journey across genres which definitely brings him into the spotlight.

The Thievery Corporation Invite You To Pick Up A Protest Sign And March Into The "Culture Of Fear" Alongside Them....

Album Cover to Thievery Corporation's - Culture Of Fear

Like James Bond returning to England, the slick and stylish duo of Eric Hilton and Rob Garza return to our nation's capital to unleash a soundtrack of hope and truth, this time focused on another region in peril: their own backyard.

As the opening track 'Web Of Deception' begins you can almost picture a black 1976 Gran Torino pull up outside the Eighteenth Street Lounge in Washington DC. The doors open slowly and two gentlemen in dapper suits, dark shades, and briefcases get out, they both turn to the pulsing cities nighttime profile, settling on the elegantly lit Capitol building and shake their heads in unison before silently striding into the club to get to work.

The Dropkick Murphys Wish You Happy St Patrick's Day And In Turn Wish A Friend A Grand Farewell

Album cover to Dropkick Murphys - Going Out In Style

What better way to celebrate the passing of a fictional, working class, Irish immigrant then basing an album on his life and times? So bow your heads and let the Dropkick Murphys tell you a tale...

"Going Out in Style," the 12th album from Boston Celtic punk outfit, Dropkick Murphys, spins a eulogy of Cornelius Larkin, an Irish immigrant and Korean War veteran with a rough and tumble life that spans the 13 tracks of the release and even includes an obituary in the liner notes. The album jumps between old world Irish folk and the Dropkick's punk-infused take on it, which does not stray far from the sound the band has developed over the years.

The Orb and David Gilmour, two great tastes that taste great together.....

CD cover of The Orb's Metallic Spheres

If you would have told me ten years ago that The Orb, who have never been shy about their art-rock and psychedelic leanings, would collaborate with David Gilmour of Pink Floyd, I would have said "Yeah, I wish!"......well, I guess the Gods of Ambient grooves were listening because my wish just came true.

If you grew up listening to Pink Floyd or stealing your dad's Pink Floyd records like I did then you know the gigantic footprint that they left -and are still leaving- on the music industry. Spanning over decades, it is safe to say they have amassed an army of fans and influenced many composers and musicians as well, one of those being LX Patterson of The Orb.

Jay-Z and N*E*R*D save you from programming your iPod for the party.

Jay-Z

Normally the title "Hits Collection..." or "Best Of..." was seen as a gravestone for a popular musician, a last dash at cash before you retired to your castle in upstate New York or vineyard in California. But in the case of once-retired hit maker/CEO/business mogul Jay-Z, and the touch of gold production team of N*E*R*D, it sounds more like just another calm before the storm.

First off if you are a serious Jay-Z or N*E*R*D fan then there is nothing new for you on these releases other than a trip down memory lane without sitting in a pile of your CDs and 12"s. But the twist here is that if you are a rock-solid Shawn Carter fan or actually bought the N*E*R*D's first album before Pharrel scrapped it and re-recorded the whole thing for a second release, then you might start questioning the use of the titles "Best Of.." and "Hits Collection".

TV On The Radio’s Dave Sitek brings balloons and 21st century funk to the party......

Maximum Balloon album cover

Floating away from his studio in N.Y. to the sun and beaches of L.A., Dave Sitek inflates his solo project with so much talent it is ready to pop. From David Byrne to Karen O to guest appearances by Tunde & Kyp, you can be sure that the Maximum Balloon is here to brighten up any party.

When a musical prodigy such as Dave Sitek decides to do a solo album, fans worry.....Will he grab for the dollars and fill it with tracks featuring Kanye West and Lady Gaga? Will he discover South American cowboy music and try to feed to the masses? Will it sound completely different because he recorded it on the West Coast? Will he go acoustic???? Luckily for his fans, none of these scenarios are the case and what you get is another piece of musical genius by a producer who can do no wrong.

The Wavves Kick Sand In Your Speakers And Laugh....

Wavves King Of The Beach Album Cover

Remember when summer lasted forever, when you would run from the front doors of your school throwing paper in the air and ripping off your uniform to reveal jean shorts and an offensive t-shirt. You would awake at the crack of dawn with boundless energy, bent on climbing every mountain and breaking at least one skateboard deck a day as you rode a 'Wavve' of immortality and invincibility straight through whatever was considered proper behavior.

Those summers almost always included a partner in crime who beyond bumming your parents out, also had a knack for getting in the most trouble and then smiling when the authorities showed up knowing that the next phrase that came out of his mouth was going to lead to deeper trouble.......enter Nathan Williams, lo-fi infamous leader of the Wavves and all around snot nosed punk who's endless summer began long ago and is continually documented in his music including his newest release, 'King Of The Beach'.

Take A Trip Down A "Lost Highway" With A Dangerous Mouse, A Sparkly Horse And David Lynch....

Dark Night Of The Soul album cover

What do you get when you combine one of the most prolific producers of hip-hop and pop with one of the most tortured musicians of this decade and then sprinkle it with one of the strangest artists of our time? A project that was lost and then found again by way of record label red tape and has all the essential elements to present a "Dark Night Of The Soul"......

In 2006, Mark Linkous-- better known as Sparklehorse, brought on super producer Brian Joseph Burton--better known as Dangermouse a.k.a. Gnarls Barkley a.k.a.

Morcheeba Regains Their Voice And Returns To The Iconic Front Porch For A Tall Glass Of Lemonade.....

Morcheeba Blood Like Lemonade Album Cover

Reunited again with original vocalist Skye Edwards, Morcheeba's Paul and Ross Godfrey have managed to recapture the band's classic sultry vocal trip-hop chill-out vibe that fans have been waiting for through two experimental albums.....effectively, the blood is pumping again and swirling in the lemonade.

Seven years is a long time to wait for an album but the titans of trip-hop have returned full circle to the marriage of the Godfrey brothers beats and the sly vocals of the lovely Skye much to the relief of their fans.

Sleigh Bells "Treat" The World To A Little Brooklyn Noise!!

Sleigh Bells Treats album cover

Sometimes it's the simple things in life that make the most sense. Once again the good city of Brooklyn has stepped up to give the world of the music industry a blast of what it might need right about now....a bit of simplicity. Take one part hammering drums & guitar and one part shoegazer female vocals and you have the latest "Treat" from New York in the form of Sleigh Bells.

The musical hurricane known as the Sleigh Bells (with Derek Miller serving as the chaos of massive drums with screaming guitars and his band mate Alexis Kraus dwelling in the eye of it with her sweeter than sugar vocals) started dropping demos on the Internet last year and in the few months that followed they had quickly earned their way into every conversation of, "What is new in music today?" Following up the goss
