The(Probably) Awesome book club is indeed AWESOME!

these people had no problem getting out. just sayin'

We had our first meeting on Saturday (where were you?! It was only like 7 inches of snow!) and I think I can officially say that the (probably) can be changed to CAPS LOCK AWESOME! We talked about what kinds of books we like and everyone had read something that no one else had, which was super cool.

Our next meeting is Saturday, April 20 from 10-11:30 a.m. in the Burnham Hoyt book club room at the Central Library. We’re reading Glow by Amy Ryan. If you want to join us, read the book and come hang out. We’ll have coffee and donuts. If you don’t get a chance to read the book in time but want to join the book club, come by anyway. We’ll be picking books for the next sessions plus talking about the book we read. I’m pretty sure no one bites.

Teen Book Club at Central Starts March 23

Teens, you've been asking for a book club at Central forever! We can finally start one!

We are going to meet on Saturday, 23 March at 10 AM to talk about what kind of book club you would like and also to pick out some books to read. We will have donuts! Awesome!

Some of you have suggested that we have a sci-fi and fantasy book club-- this can happen if you want it to. Or, we can read a bit of everything. So swing by the library with a list of books you think we should read! Bring a friend so you know that at least 2 cool people will be there. Also, we should probably have a cool name, right? So think about that too.

Superhero Summer!

Summer is a time for playing outside, relaxing, and watching the latest summer blockbuster at your local cinema.

A bonus for this year: 3 superhero movies! The Avengers was amazing, and while I haven’t gotten a chance to see the new Spiderman yet, it sounds like it’s pretty good as well. Last but not least? The new Batman movie, of course! Even though Bane (the villian) looks more like Jaws from The Spy Who Loved Me (or maybe Hayden Christiansen’s Darth Vader wearing headgear?), I’ll still give it a whirl.

Teens - Help us choose magazines for next year!

It seems like it’s crazy early to think about 2013 already, but at the Central Library, we’re doing just that.

I’m in the process of selecting teen magazines for the Burnham Hoyt Room and I’d like your input. Is there a magazine that you wish the library carried? Let me know! You can respond in the comments or call the Hoyt desk at 720-865-1312 – we would love to hear from you!

Here’s what Hoyt currently carries for teens:

All You
BMX Plus
J-14
LaTeen
Mad
Nintendo Power
Playstation: The Official Magazine
Seventeen
Sister 2 Sister
Teen Vogue
Teen Voices
Transworld Skateboarding

Library of the Living Dead: Preparing the Central Library for the Zombie Apocalypse

Zombies Are Coming

We’ve been hearing about the upcoming zombie apocalypse for quite some time—even the CDC has a zombie preparedness web page! Even though it’s coming, not many people have taken the steps to prepare themselves. The teens at the Central Library decided to remedy this problem. With tons of books about zombies, maps of the Central Library, and a lot of creativity, the teens created a zombie safety plan.

Some of the teens worked on a detailed map showing how we could help with triage and defense. Almost everyone made zombie warning signs and contributed to a list of things we would need at Central to keep safe. After the teens finished, we presented our plan to a member of DPL’s security team. If they implement all of the teens’ requests, you will soon see guard bears and salt moats around all of our branches.

Looking for something awesome to read?

Do you know exactly the kind of book you want to read next, or are you looking for something different?

Do you really like funny stories? Perhaps steampunk is more your thing? Maybe you need to read some historical fiction for school? Looking for more books like A Child Called It? We have many excellent teen book lists for you to choose from.

Great documentaries about the arts

cover for exit through the gift shop

I’ve been looking for some extra inspiration in the studio lately, so I’m revisiting favorite documentaries on the arts.

Exit Through the Gift Shop - Banksy created this film using footage from a French shop owner obsessed with graffiti and meeting Banksy. Beautiful images, and a surprising twist.

Bollywood Films!

You’ve never fallen in love unless there’s been a scene and costume change.

Here are some of my favorites:
Dil Chahta Hai – A story of 3 men and the summer they find love.
Chup Chup Ke – A swindler fakes his death, pretends to be deaf, then meets the girl of his dreams.

What to do with yourself while you’re waiting for Mass Effect 3 to come out.

Do you ever find yourself in this crazy loop where you obsess about an awesome upcoming thing? Right now, I’m obsessing about the forthcoming videogame Mass Effect 3.

When Mass Effect 3 was delayed to March 6, 2012 earlier this year, I told everyone I knew (and a few that I didn’t) that it was going to be the longest wait ever, and that I would probably die of impatience before it came out. Instead of obsessively playing the games again, (okay, maybe I’m doing that a little) or obsessing on the Internet (well, I am doing that) I’ve decided to read and watch some awesome Sci Fi. Here’s what I’ve come up with:

Books

Quirky Short Stories

cover for Revenge of the Mooncake Vixen by Marilyn Chin

Do you need a little interesting non-committal reading? Grab one of these!

Revenge of the Mooncake Vixen by Marilyn Chin
A novel in short stories, this book follows the lives of Mei Ling and Moonie, identical (and comically opposite in nature) twins. Chin researched Chinese women's revenge stories for this book and the combination of old fables with what it's like to be a Chinese-American today are brilliant.
