Plaza Voices: "I can be anything I want to be"

Group of people at the Naturalization Ceremony at Central Library

"On Tuesday, April 15, I got to witness a Naturalization Swearing-In Ceremony at the Central Library. Fifty people representing twenty-three countries became naturalized American citizens. The ceremony started with the Presentation of the Colors performed by the West High School Color Guard. Then "America the Beautiful" was sung by Jubilee and Lenlee Davis (daughters of DPL employee James Davis.) I have to admit to you that I got emotional. I took my seat, regained my composure and took this time to reflect on my life in America. Do you ever stop to think how lucky we are to live in the United States? Sure…the United States isn’t perfect and we have our frustrations. But for me, this is the best country. I can be anything I want to be. Anything! I tell my kids this every day. We receive a free education until we’re 18 years of age, and at that point, there are many ways to receive a college education. Is it easy? No. Is it possible? Yes. It really is amazing. When it was time to take the Oath of Allegiance, I myself stood, raised my right hand and swore an Oath to the United States, a country that I have called home my entire life. I looked around and tried to imagine what our new Americans must have been through to get to this point. Well, now, they made it. They are all citizens of the United States of America."
