Summer Hoops

Blog image

LeBron James is announcing his decision live on Thursday, July 8 at 9 PM ET on ESPN.

I was reminded while watching Hoop Reality, that only 1.2% of all college basketball players are recruited to the NBA. James is a very talented and lucky man.  A recent trip to watch the Washington Mystics and Los Angeles Sparks (sans an injured Candace Parker) had me wondering about the percentage of young women being recruited to the WNBA.

Flash Mob!

Blog image

We at the Fresh City Life office have been mighty inspired by flash mobs of late. In case you don't know, a flash mob is a spontaneous-appearing choreographed dance in a public place - organizers secretly send out the word via email or text, and when the music starts, the crowd boogies down, surprising

all the unsuspecting onlookers. Flash mobs can be giant, with hundreds of people involved, or small - but either way there's a fierce expression of FUN and that's what we're about. Here's a video of a big flash mob in Stockholm last year - their choice of Michael Jackson is perfect - the King of Choreography (yeah, ok and Pop) lives on in the streets!

Wouldn't the library be a perfect place for a flash mob?  Hint hint...;)

1998 Nobel Winner José Saramago's Literary Legacy

Blog image

Winner of the Nobel prize for literature in 1998, Portuguese novelist José Saramago died last month. He was 87. He left a long list of novels--and books in other genres, too--as his legacy in spite of the fact that he didn’t start writing novels until he was in his fifties.

Library Journal recommended Blindness as an “excellent choice for a book-discussion group.” Publishers Weekly said The Cave is a “remarkably generous and eloquent novel” and that “Saramago [had] an extraordinary ability to make a complex narrative read like a simple parable.”

Best in Show

Some musical artists do more than play music, they put on a show! Excelling in theatricality, these bands feature elaborate costumes and stage productions. Even on CD, their showmanship shines through.

  1. GWAR - Perhaps the most visually arresting of all costumed bands, their politically charged performances often involve spraying the audience with various fluids.
  2. KISS - With fire-breathing and pyrotechnics, KISS is a fiery force to be reckoned with.

Tales of breastfeeding...

Blog image

Working full time while nursing a baby is the most rewarding and exhausting thing I've ever done! Where do I turn when I need a little breastfeeding inspiration? First I look at my cute lil' baby, and then I hit up Denver Public Library.

Deciding to breastfeed isn't something I really thought about too much. I simply knew I wanted to try it--I have nothing against parents who formula-feed their babies. I'm very much a "whatever works for you" kind of gal and some women just can't breastfeed for a multitude of reasons.

I learned a little about breastfeeding in my childbirth class and decided to take a breastfeeding class after it came to an end.  I did ok 'breastfeeding' a stuffed Cookie Monster, so when baby arrived I gave it a go.
